Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
How should wind-sensor heating power and loss of heating be addressed?
The short answer
Treat sensor heating as an auxiliary function with a defined supply, monitoring method and degraded-state response. Confirm whether the selected sensor requires heating under the intended environmental conditions.
Understand the interface decision
Heating can affect measurement availability while also consuming power that must remain available in the relevant weather. Loss of the heater may leave a numerically plausible signal whose quality has changed. The controller should not assume that electrical communication proves the sensing surface is functioning as intended.
Control performance depends on signal meaning, timing and the approved operating limits. Keep normal optimization separate from protective constraints, and identify which function owns each decision. The selected turbine and controller documentation must define the actual settings.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- Sensor heating requirements and the conditions they cover. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- Heater supply capacity and its availability during turbine shutdown. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Status or diagnostic information indicating heating performance. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- The approved response when environmental measurement quality is uncertain. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Accept the arrangement when the power budget and control response cover the required sensing condition. Do not assign a universal heater power or presume every wind sensor contains heating. Use the selected manufacturer’s data and installation instructions.
A useful commissioning record verifies the supply and available status signals while distinguishing that evidence from a full environmental performance test. Retain any cold-weather validation still required by the project.
