Understand the interface decision

A healthy periodic heartbeat can coexist with incorrect logic or a failed actuator. Power-supply loss may also produce behavior different from a watchdog timeout. The design should therefore identify exactly what is being supervised and avoid treating the watchdog as a complete system-safety demonstration.

Control performance depends on signal meaning, timing and the approved operating limits. Keep normal optimization separate from protective constraints, and identify which function owns each decision. The selected turbine and controller documentation must define the actual settings.

Put these inputs in the review record

Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.

• The task, communication or update event monitored by the watchdog. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
• Timeout basis and the relevant execution or network conditions. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
• Physical output states after the detected failure. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
• Other faults requiring separate diagnostics or protective measures. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.

Define the acceptance boundary

Accept the watchdog function through a test that creates the failure it claims to detect. Verify the resulting hardware behavior as well as the software indication. Do not assume a controller reboot always establishes the turbine’s intended protective state.

The record should state which fault was induced and which functions remained outside the test. This makes the watchdog evidence usable without inflating a narrow diagnostic result into a broader reliability or safety claim.
