Do shock and tilt indicators prove that wind equipment arrived undamaged?

The short answer

Shock and tilt indicators can flag a potential handling event, but they do not prove that equipment is undamaged or identify the cause of a defect on their own. Interpret them using the device's instructions, installation position and shipment record, then combine the result with the equipment supplier's condition inspection and disposition process.

Know what the indicator measures

Record the indicator model, intended threshold or activation behavior, installation location and initial status. Ask why it was selected for the package and what action its instructions require. A device may respond to a particular movement or exposure while leaving other damage mechanisms unobserved. Its reading also depends on whether it remained correctly attached. Avoid treating a normal indication as a comprehensive test of bearings, electronics, blades or concealed mechanical connections within the wind equipment shipment.

Inspect without jumping to conclusions

Photograph the indicator before disturbing the package, together with the package identifier and surrounding condition. If it has activated, record the finding and follow the agreed inspection route. Do not assume that activation establishes transport liability or that it authorizes a field repair. Conversely, absence of activation should not override visible damage or a documented handling incident. The responsible technical party should decide which additional inspections or tests are appropriate for the affected item.

Preserve evidence and disposition

Retain the initial and receipt records, device information and any relevant loading or transfer observations. Link the technical assessment to the exact equipment and affected package. Record whether the item is released, requires further examination or is rejected under the agreed process. These indicators are useful screening aids when their limits are understood. They should complement a planned transport evidence system, not replace proper packing, competent cargo securing or the acceptance checks required before installation.
