Small wind / Buyer questions
Purchasing and delivery
What should a wind buyer check in cargo insurance documents?
The short answer
Review the cargo insurance schedule with qualified insurance and logistics advisers against the actual equipment, insured parties, journey and agreed delivery arrangement. Check values, covered risks, exclusions, deductibles and notification requirements. A freight quotation mentioning insurance does not establish the complete cover or settle how a particular loss would be assessed under the policy.
Match the insured shipment
Confirm the goods description, package or shipment references, insured value basis, currency, origin, destination and any intermediate storage or transport. Ask whose interest is insured and who can make a claim. Reconcile the policy period with the intended movement and delivery conditions. If equipment is shipped in parts or waits in a warehouse, have the adviser confirm how those circumstances are treated. Do not assume that a reference to the main turbine automatically includes every accessory, spare or separate shipment.
Understand conditions before dispatch
Ask for an explanation of relevant exclusions, deductibles, packing conditions and claim-notice arrangements. Determine which records should be retained at loading and receipt. Incoterms rules can allocate specified delivery obligations and risks when incorporated into a sale agreement, but the insurance policy and associated contracts still need their own review. This page supplies a documentary checklist, not advice on policy interpretation or a promise that a particular risk or event is insured.
Prepare a workable response route
Give receiving staff the correct contact and procedure for reporting a suspected loss. Record observed condition promptly and preserve supporting documents without making unsupported statements about cause or liability. If the route, cargo value or storage plan changes, request a review before relying on the original cover. A useful insurance review leaves the team knowing which documents apply and whom to contact. It should not end with an unexplained insured stamp on a shipping checklist.
