Electrical configuration

Does secondary injection prove an entire wind-interface protection chain works?

The short answer

No. Secondary injection can verify defined relay-input, logic and output behavior, but it does not automatically prove the complete primary sensing, wiring and trip chain.

Understand the interface decision

The test’s coverage starts at the injection point and depends on what remains connected. Current transformers, primary conductors, field wiring or the actual interrupting device may lie outside the demonstrated boundary. The project needs complementary evidence for the portions not covered.

Electrical reliability also depends on the installation environment and supporting functions. Review these matters within the accepted design and maintenance responsibilities. The checks below are planning and evidence requirements, rather than instructions to modify energized equipment.

Put these inputs in the review record

Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.

  • The exact injection boundary and functions exercised. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
  • Primary sensing and wiring excluded from that test. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
  • Trip output, interlocks and interrupting-device behavior included or excluded. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
  • The complementary checks required for complete protection acceptance. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.

Define the acceptance boundary

Accept the result only for the functions actually tested. Do not label a relay report as proof of the entire installed protection chain. The responsible protection engineer should define how separate tests and inspections combine into the required acceptance evidence.

The final matrix should connect each protective requirement to its supporting test boundary. This makes an omitted CT or trip-circuit verification visible without dismissing the valid evidence that secondary injection did provide.
