Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
What should be checked before connecting a 4–20 mA sensor to a wind controller?
The short answer
Confirm whether the sensor and input are active or passive, how the loop is powered, and the permitted electrical limits. A shared 4–20 mA signal label does not establish a complete compatible connection.
Understand the interface decision
A loop can fail if both sides expect the other to supply power or if the combined arrangement violates voltage requirements. Isolation, common references and fault signaling also matter. The sensor’s engineering range must be mapped consistently so an electrically valid current represents the intended physical quantity.
Electrical reliability also depends on the installation environment and supporting functions. Review these matters within the accepted design and maintenance responsibilities. The checks below are planning and evidence requirements, rather than instructions to modify energized equipment.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- Sensor and controller input type with the approved loop-power arrangement. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- Supply and input limits across the connected loop. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Isolation, common-reference and cable requirements. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- Scaling, invalid-current interpretation and known-value verification. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Accept the connection using the exact sensor and input documentation. Do not connect by terminal appearance or assume every analog input supplies sensor power. Confirm the signal interpretation before permitting it to influence protective or control decisions.
The commissioning evidence should cover representative points and the defined fault indications. Retain both the injected or reference current and the interpreted engineering value so wiring compatibility and scaling are demonstrated separately.
