Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
Where should meters be placed when checking wind power-conversion losses?
The short answer
Place measurements around a clearly defined conversion boundary and use compatible time intervals. Generator output, converter output and energy at the site meter include different losses and cannot be substituted without explanation.
Understand the interface decision
An efficiency calculation needs an input and output that belong to the same equipment boundary and operating interval. Auxiliary supplies, storage exchanges and instrument uncertainty can alter the result. A ratio derived from two unrelated dashboard values may therefore say little about actual conversion performance.
Useful monitoring evidence preserves signal definitions, measurement boundaries and configuration identity. A plausible display value alone does not establish the physical condition. Build the review around a traceable comparison between the reported information and an independent reference.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- The equipment and auxiliary circuits inside the chosen boundary. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- Input and output measurement locations and sign conventions. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Instrument suitability, uncertainty and common time interval. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- Storage or energy accumulation that changes during the measurement. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Accept the calculation only when the energy balance and measurement basis are explicit. Do not label a whole-system ratio as converter efficiency. At low output, acknowledge that auxiliary consumption and measurement uncertainty may dominate the apparent result.
The report should retain both measured quantities rather than only the final percentage. This lets another engineer reproduce the calculation and identify which losses were included or deliberately left outside the boundary.
