Should insulation-resistance testing be performed with wind electronics connected?

The short answer

Only as permitted by the equipment manufacturer’s approved test procedure. Insulation-test voltage can damage electronic components, filters or surge devices if the test boundary is chosen incorrectly.

Understand the interface decision

A test suitable for an isolated cable is not automatically suitable for the complete connected converter assembly. Sensitive devices may provide unintended paths or be exposed to a voltage outside their intended test conditions. The test plan must identify exactly what remains connected.

Useful monitoring evidence preserves signal definitions, measurement boundaries and configuration identity. A plausible display value alone does not establish the physical condition. Build the review around a traceable comparison between the reported information and an independent reference.

Put these inputs in the review record

Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.

  • The cable or equipment insulation boundary being assessed. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
  • Manufacturer instructions for disconnecting or protecting electronics. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
  • Specified test method, voltage and interpretation criteria. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
  • Restoration and functional checks after the approved test. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.

Define the acceptance boundary

Accept insulation evidence only for the defined tested boundary. Do not apply a generic high-voltage test to a connected wind controller or converter to discover whether it survives. Resolve unclear equipment instructions with the responsible supplier before proceeding.

The record should include the circuit condition and any removed devices. A resistance number without the test configuration cannot establish what insulation was actually assessed or whether the installed arrangement has been restored correctly.
