Small wind / Buyer questions
Energy and economics
How much annual maintenance cost can my wind project afford?
The short answer
You can calculate a scenario-based allowance, but it does not establish what maintenance will actually cost. Subtract the required annual financial contribution and other operating expenses from the modeled annual electricity value. The remainder is maintenance headroom under those assumptions. Compare it with a documented service scope, local access costs and potential replacement events before judging the project affordable.
Separate routine and irregular expenses
Routine inspections, planned service, access equipment and local labor may be paid differently from unplanned repairs or major component replacement. Clarify which items the proposed service allowance covers. A warranty does not automatically remove transport, access or owner responsibilities.
For a first screen, use annualized assumptions transparently. For the investment decision, place irregular costs in their expected years and run alternative cases. An averaged annual figure can conceal a cash requirement the owner cannot accommodate when it occurs.
Work out the allowance
Illustrative annual scenario: useful electricity and exports are valued at 4,000 currency units. Other operating expenses are assumed to be 500, and the owner requires 2,500 of annual net cash contribution before financing and tax. Maintenance headroom is 4,000 − 500 − 2,500 = 1,000.
If energy value falls by 20% to 3,200, headroom drops to 200. A 20% change in one input has reduced this allowance by 80%. These are invented screening figures, not MARSTON service costs or energy claims.
Use the result to challenge assumptions
If quoted routine service already exceeds the allowance, reconsider the financial target, the site or the equipment scope. If routine service fits but irregular repairs could overwhelm the result, show that exposure explicitly rather than assuming it is covered by the annual allowance.
Obtain the model-specific maintenance requirements, service responsibilities and warranty terms. Keep operational suitability separate from the allowance calculation: reducing necessary inspections to make the spreadsheet pass does not make the project a sound purchase.
