What should happen to wind service access when a contractor leaves the project?

The short answer

When a contractor leaves, review and revoke or change its authorized service access through the owner's approved access-management process. Cover physical keys, digital accounts, remote tools and retained information as applicable. Do not simply delete an account without preserving required project records, and do not assume that ending a service contract automatically removes every route through which access was previously granted.

Inventory the authorized access

Identify the contractor's named accounts, shared arrangements, physical access items and any supplier-mediated remote access. Record the owner responsible for each system or asset. Ask whether subcontractors or third-party platforms were included in the service arrangement. Use the actual access records rather than guessing from the contractor's last work order. The scope should reflect the project's equipment and systems; this FAQ does not imply that every wind installation has remote monitoring or an internet-connected controller.

Execute an approved transition

Have authorized administrators and site representatives remove or change access according to the applicable process. Preserve operational continuity, emergency support routes and required evidence. Transfer ownership of service records or authorized configurations where the agreement provides for it. Avoid exposing credentials in handover emails or giving a replacement contractor broader privileges than its role requires. Technical and contractual questions about retained files or continuing support should be resolved by the responsible parties rather than assumed from possession of a backup.

Verify closure and future support

Record the access changes, returned keys or devices, remaining exceptions and responsible owners. Confirm that the incoming support arrangement has the information and permissions it actually needs. Retain the access history for the period required by project policy and applicable obligations. A closed departure record maintains control over future service actions while preserving accountability. It is distinct from uninstalling equipment software, erasing maintenance history or authorizing another provider to make technical changes to the wind system.
