How can old underground workings affect a proposed wind tower foundation?
The short answer
Old underground workings can create a ground-movement hazard that ordinary shallow bearing calculations do not capture. The relevant effects depend on workings depth, geometry, condition and the surrounding ground. A site may need specialist mining information and movement assessment before its foundation location or support concept can be considered suitable.
Establish the mining model behind the plot
Collect available records of workings, shafts, entries, extraction boundaries and previous remediation. Compare their coordinates and depth references with the proposed tower and any guy anchors. A regional mining map can identify a question without resolving the exact ground beneath the installation.
Missing records are uncertainty, not proof that workings are absent. Conversely, a mining history does not mean every site has the same present movement risk.
Translate ground movement into support demand
Potential settlement, tilt or horizontal strain can affect the tower base and separated anchors differently. A rigid footing may redistribute local pressure, but it cannot be assumed to prevent movement of a much larger ground mass.
Ask whether the specialist assessment covers the movement pattern and timescale relevant to the intended installation. A previous period without obvious surface damage does not automatically establish that all future movements have ceased.
Compare location, treatment and structural response
The project team should evaluate whether avoiding the affected area is feasible and whether any proposed treatment or foundation strategy addresses the identified mechanism. Ground treatment requires its own design and verification; a claim that the site was filled is insufficient.
Request a site-specific conclusion stating the mining features considered and their consequence for the support layout. Local investigation and development requirements must be checked separately. This page makes no universal legal claim and provides no authorization for drilling into old workings, shafts or potentially hazardous underground ground conditions.
