Can removing nearby trees change ground movement around a wind foundation?

The short answer

Removing trees can change ground movement where vegetation has influenced the moisture state of shrinkable soil. Reduced water withdrawal may allow desiccated ground to rewet and swell. This is a soil-dependent mechanism, not a universal consequence of clearing trees, and it should be distinguished from aerodynamic changes in wind exposure.

Check whether the soil is susceptible

The relevant inputs include soil shrinkability, depth of moisture influence, tree species and size, drainage and the history of the site. Sandy or otherwise non-shrinkable ground does not respond like moisture-sensitive clay simply because trees are present.

A visible root near the surface is not a complete measure of the moisture-affected ground volume. Investigation and interpretation should address the layers that could influence the proposed foundation.

Separate clearing from an unchanged-ground assumption

If trees are removed before construction, the ground may still be adjusting afterward. If removal occurs beside an existing foundation, uneven moisture recovery can create differential movement rather than uniform uplift.

A site design prepared before clearing should therefore identify which vegetation and moisture conditions it assumed. Merely redrawing the obstruction map for the wind study does not update the geotechnical assessment.

Coordinate vegetation decisions with the foundation review

Compare retaining, removing or relocating the installation in consultation with appropriate geotechnical and arboricultural specialists. The objective is to establish a defensible movement allowance or support strategy, not to select a generic tree-to-tower distance.

Request an explicit assessment of whether planned vegetation changes affect foundation movement and whether separate guy anchors experience different conditions. The RHS source explains the moisture mechanism around buildings; its examples do not supply wind foundation dimensions or guarantee that removal will cause heave at a MARSTON site. Avoid unassessed root cutting or excavation near a completed support.
