How does uneven settlement differ from uniform settlement beneath a wind tower?
The short answer
Uniform settlement moves the foundation downward with little change in orientation. Differential settlement moves one part more than another and can tilt the tower base. Both can affect the installation, but they require different interpretation. A single elevation reading cannot establish whether the foundation has translated, rotated or changed shape.
Compare movement over a known distance
For a small rigid-body rotation, the difference in vertical movement divided by the horizontal separation approximates the angle in radians. Hypothetically, a 4 mm difference across 2 m gives 0.002 rad. This is geometric arithmetic, not an allowable tilt or a MARSTON installation tolerance.
The separation must be measured between the same reference points used for the elevation comparison. Mixing points at different structural levels can produce a misleading result.
Preserve the datum and distinguish deformation
Use a stable survey reference outside the suspected movement zone and retain the initial baseline. If the benchmark itself moves, apparent foundation settlement can be understated or exaggerated.
Several points around the base help distinguish rigid tilt from localized pedestal deformation or measurement error. Temperature, access conditions and survey precision should be considered when deciding whether a small difference is meaningful. A visual impression that the tower leans is not equivalent to a measured foundation-rotation trend.
Link the observed or predicted movement to action
Before construction, compare predicted total and differential movement with the supported tower’s requirements. For an existing installation, a qualified reviewer should assess measurements alongside soil conditions, loading and any nearby drainage or excavation changes.
Do not attempt to correct a leaning tower by tightening anchors or adding improvised shims. The next decision is whether the movement is established, whether it is progressing, and whether the support remains acceptable. Uniform settlement can still affect cables and drainage even where tilt is negligible.
