Small wind / Buyer questions
Structure and civil works
Must a wind foundation be checked for overturning in more than one direction?
The short answer
A wind foundation generally needs assessment for all relevant load directions and simultaneous moment components. A square footing, rectangular footing and irregular anchor arrangement do not have identical directional behavior. Checking only the direction aligned with the strongest foundation axis can miss a governing combination of bearing pressure, uplift or structural demand.
Keep the load components together
Foundation actions should use a defined coordinate system and reference point. If two horizontal-axis moments occur together, retain both components with their concurrent vertical and horizontal forces. Rotating a load vector into foundation coordinates may change which corners or edges carry the greatest compression.
A drawing’s north arrow is not necessarily the structural x-axis. Verify the transformation rather than assuming load labels already match the footing orientation.
Examine the geometry in the loaded direction
For a rectangular foundation, overturning about different axes acts across different widths and reinforcement arrangements. A diagonal load can create a different contact region from either principal-axis check alone. Openings, nearby slopes or uneven ground may further reduce symmetry.
The magnitude of the combined moment is useful information, but it does not preserve every directional effect. Replacing two components with one scalar is only valid within an assessment method that handles their orientation properly.
Compare complete governing cases
Ask the designer to identify which directional cases govern bearing, contact, reinforcement, anchors and sliding. Different checks may be controlled by different cases; one maximum moment number cannot necessarily describe all of them.
If the tower or foundation orientation changes, repeat the relevant coordinate and geometry review before relying on earlier results. For a MARSTON enquiry, request the applicable turbine and tower interface load cases rather than inferring directional loads from electric yaw capability. Yaw function does not establish a direction-independent foundation demand.
