Does wind power suit a vehicle fleet that returns to the depot at night?

The short answer

A night-returning fleet creates a possible use for generation outside solar hours, but it does not establish that local wind will match the charging window. Start with required energy at the charger meter, arrival times, departure deadlines and site power limits. Compare those requirements with time-aligned wind data. Wind can reduce imported energy in suitable intervals; dependable departure readiness requires the complete supply and charging-control arrangement.

Define the charging obligation

Separate vehicle battery energy, charger input energy and other depot demand. Record whether vehicles can charge throughout the parking interval and whether their requirements differ. A total fleet kWh figure hides the latest arrival, earliest departure and simultaneous charging limits. State which energy boundary is being used before comparing generation or sizing any additional conversion equipment.

A three-vehicle example

Assume three vehicles together require 60 kWh measured at the charger input between 21:00 and 06:00. Across nine hours, their average charging input would be about 6.7 kW if evenly scheduled. That average does not describe individual charger ratings or the depot’s other loads. Wind available at noon cannot directly meet this night window unless it is stored or serves another valuable load under an approved arrangement.

Test the deadline, not only the total

Run an interval-based schedule with low-wind periods, arrival changes and the site import limit. Show how much energy can be delivered by each departure time. If another source fills a shortfall, retain its capacity and operating cost in the comparison. An energy-management feature must be supported by the actual proposed equipment; it should not be inferred from a turbine’s electric-yaw function.

Assess the marginal turbine size

A larger turbine may add useful night generation at some sites while creating more surplus when vehicles are absent. Compare incremental accepted kWh, not just additional nameplate kW. Include approved export, other depot loads and any externally supplied storage as separate cases. Confirm the complete electrical interface before adding wind to an existing solar or charger installation.
