Small wind / Buyer questions
Application decisions
Why might a diesel generator keep running when a wind turbine is producing power?
The short answer
A generator may still provide the system’s electrical reference, operating reserve or power needed during a wind drop. It may also have an equipment-specific minimum loading requirement. Consequently, wind production does not automatically allow the generator to stop or reduce its output without limit. Evaluate the complete wind-diesel control arrangement and actual generator fuel behavior; a one-for-one fuel-saving claim cannot be derived from turbine energy alone.
Identify the generator’s role
Record which equipment maintains voltage and frequency, handles load steps and supports restarts. The answer may change between operating modes. A system capable of diesel-off operation requires the appropriate equipment, controls and evidence; it is not created simply by adding a wind generator. Existing generator limits must come from its applicable documentation and the integrator’s approved operating plan.
A constrained dispatch illustration
Assume a site load is 6 kW, available wind is 4.5 kW and the chosen operating case requires the running generator to supply at least 3 kW. Only 3 kW of wind can serve that unchanged load unless another approved destination or operating mode is available. The remaining 1.5 kW of available wind must be managed. The assumed 3 kW limit is not a universal diesel rule.
Calculate fuel with the right evidence
Compare generator operating hours and output against the actual fuel-consumption curve, including relevant start and stop effects. Reducing electrical output by half does not establish that fuel use falls by half. Distinguish reduced generator loading from avoided generator runtime. An externally proposed storage system may change dispatch possibilities, but it adds its own losses, power limits and control requirements.
Specify the acceptance case
Require the proposal to explain sudden wind loss, load increases, surplus generation and restoration after a fault. These are operating responsibilities, not only energy-budget entries. Compare the same site service before and after the wind addition, with any curtailed generation excluded from useful energy. MARSTON wind equipment must be assessed with the named generator and conversion package before compatibility is claimed.
