Why can a five-minute monitoring trend miss the cause of a wind-converter trip?

The short answer

A five-minute trend can average away the short sequence that triggered a trip. Diagnostic evidence needs time resolution and event capture suited to the response being investigated.

Understand the interface decision

Fast current, voltage or state changes can occur between dashboard samples. Even a sampled maximum may not preserve the order of events. The review should therefore identify which signals and time relationship are needed before deciding that a slow trend proves normal operation around a trip.

Useful monitoring evidence preserves signal definitions, measurement boundaries and configuration identity. A plausible display value alone does not establish the physical condition. Build the review around a traceable comparison between the reported information and an independent reference.

Put these inputs in the review record

Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.

  • The fault function and its relevant response timescale. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
  • Sampling, averaging and event-capture behavior for each signal. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
  • Trigger and pre-event retention settings in the available recorder. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
  • Time alignment and measurement boundaries across devices. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.

Define the acceptance boundary

Accept a diagnostic conclusion only within the recorder’s demonstrated capability. Do not claim an abnormal condition was absent merely because the dashboard did not show it. Where evidence is insufficient, request an appropriate controlled capture or supplier diagnostic record.

Preserve raw event data and the recorder settings together. A plotted image without its sampling and processing information can hide a brief excursion or suggest a sequence the underlying data cannot establish.
