Why should wind power cables and low-level sensor cables be routed separately?

The short answer

Separation can reduce unwanted coupling between power circuits and sensitive signals. The routing, screen and bonding arrangement must follow the equipment instructions and the project’s EMC design.

Understand the interface decision

Converter switching and changing power currents can disturb nearby measurement or communication paths. A sensor signal may remain connected yet become noisy or intermittently invalid. Cable separation is one design measure; it does not replace suitable cable construction, termination and interface immunity.

Electrical reliability also depends on the installation environment and supporting functions. Review these matters within the accepted design and maintenance responsibilities. The checks below are planning and evidence requirements, rather than instructions to modify energized equipment.

Put these inputs in the review record

Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.

  • Power-cable and low-level signal routes including crossings and shared sections. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
  • Equipment instructions for separation and cable-screen termination. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
  • Signal type, interface sensitivity and the identified interference sources. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
  • The verification method for operation under relevant electrical conditions. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.

Define the acceptance boundary

Accept the route against the approved installation requirements. Do not assume a universal separation distance applies to every cable and converter. Any unavoidable shared section should receive a documented review rather than an informal onsite exception.

Preserve route photographs and drawings with diagnostic test results. This helps distinguish an intermittent signal problem associated with electrical operation from a sensor fault that would persist independently of the power circuit.
