Can I use a solar inverter for a wind turbine?

The short answer

Only if the manufacturer explicitly supports the proposed wind arrangement. A solar inverter's power rating and DC voltage window do not establish that it can control a wind generator. The complete proposal must address the changing generator output, how electrical loading is controlled, and what happens if the inverter stops accepting energy. Some historical products had dedicated wind operating modes; that does not make a current PV-only input suitable.

Compare behavior, not just nameplates

A PV array and a wind generator respond differently when the converter changes its input current. Wind-generator loading also interacts with rotor speed. Rectification may change AC to DC, but it does not by itself provide the required loading characteristic or manage every rejected-energy condition.

Read the exact inverter's intended-use statement before considering a shared cabinet or a convenient spare input. Manufacturer permission must cover the actual arrangement rather than an internet example using a different revision.

A compatibility table that reveals the gaps

Check Evidence to request
Source accepted Wind generator or approved interface named in the documentation
Input envelope Operating, transient and stopped-converter voltage/current cases
Loading control Supported wind control method and responsibility
Rejected power Documented protection and stopping behavior

Every row must apply to the same equipment combination. Passing one row does not close the others.

What a useful proposal looks like

For a hypothetical retrofit, an existing PV inverter may have enough nominal DC input power yet prohibit non-PV sources. Reusing it is then not an established option. An alternative wind converter could feed the site's AC system, subject to the connection and controls assessment.

Request a diagram showing each conversion boundary and a written compatibility statement. MARSTON controller or converter supply is assessed for the proposed system; no existing solar inverter is assumed compatible.

Check the proposed scope of reuse

A retrofit comparison should name what is retained and what is replaced. Keeping the old PV inverter while adding a dedicated wind converter is different from replacing the original inverter with a documented multi-source system. Compare the total equipment and approval scope of those options; an apparently free spare input may still leave most of the wind integration work unresolved.
