Why does crane mat stiffness matter as well as its plan area?
The short answer
A mat must spread a concentrated crane reaction without excessive bending or loss of useful contact. A large but flexible mat may not engage its entire plan area as assumed. The platform assessment therefore needs mat stiffness and strength, ground response and reaction geometry together; area alone is not a complete support design.
Follow the reaction through the mat
The outrigger applies force over a relatively small region. The mat bends while transmitting that force to the ground beneath it. Pressure depends on the relative stiffness of mat and ground, the support condition and any eccentricity of the applied reaction.
If the mat bears mainly near the reaction, dividing force by its full outer dimensions can understate local ground pressure.
Distinguish mat strength from stiffness
Strength concerns whether the mat resists its stresses. Stiffness concerns deformation and the resulting contact distribution. A mat can remain unbroken while deflecting enough to concentrate pressure or contribute to equipment settlement.
Material type, thickness, internal construction, condition and the arrangement of multiple mats all matter. Stacking or bridging changes the structural system and should not be assumed to preserve a manufacturer’s simple support rating.
Verify the complete selected arrangement
The temporary-works or lifting team should use the relevant support reactions and assess the mat-ground interface with an appropriate method. Ground capacity and movement must be evaluated at the same setup positions.
Request the effective bearing assumptions and the conditions attached to any pad rating. Do not use this page to size a mat, bridge a void or select a stacking arrangement. For a wind project, the accepted setup should identify both suitable supporting material and suitable ground; purchasing a high-capacity pad does not itself establish a safe crane platform.
