Why can a buried chamber threaten a crane platform that looks firm?

The short answer

A buried chamber, tank or culvert can create a weak structural span beneath an otherwise firm surface. Concentrated crane reactions may load its cover or surrounding disturbed ground in a way ordinary traffic has not. Surface appearance therefore cannot establish whether that setup location provides a continuous and adequate support path.

Identify both the void and its surroundings

Use available service records, site history and appropriate detection or investigation to locate chambers and buried structures. Their extent can exceed the visible cover. Backfill around them may also differ from the surrounding natural ground.

An abandoned feature remains relevant even if it is disconnected. Filling a chamber opening or covering its access does not automatically establish the strength of the buried structure beneath a crane support.

Check the structural and ground mechanisms

A slab can fail in bending or shear, while soil around a void can collapse or settle. The critical reaction position depends on cover geometry, depth and the load-spreading system.

A standard mat should not be assumed to bridge an unknown cavity. Bridging requires a designed structural path to verified supports, including assessment of the reactions introduced at those supports.

Move the setup or design a verified alternative

The lifting and temporary-works reviewers should compare relocation with a specifically engineered support solution. If the buried feature cannot be characterized sufficiently, avoid treating that uncertainty as ordinary soil bearing variation.

OSHA explicitly identifies known underground voids, tanks and utilities as relevant information in the U.S. crane-ground context. Local requirements still need separate confirmation. This explanation does not authorize probing, opening a chamber or setting up equipment. The decision is whether the actual crane reaction can reach suitable ground without relying on an unverified hidden span.
