Small wind / Buyer questions
Purchasing and delivery
Why record container seal numbers for a wind equipment delivery?
The short answer
Record seal identifiers at dispatch and receipt to support the transport-unit custody history. Note who applied or removed a seal and any authorized resealing. An intact, matching seal can support one part of the shipment record, but it does not prove the cargo's internal condition, correct packing or absence of damage during the journey.
Connect the seal to the shipment
Record the container or transport-unit identifier, shipment reference, seal number, date and responsible party. Retain a legible photograph showing enough context to link the seal with the unit. Distinguish the carrier's seal, a customs seal or another security device where relevant. Avoid relying on a number copied between documents without checking the physical identifier. The record is useful only if the receiving team can reconcile what was applied with what physically arrived.
Document changes in custody
Ask logistics parties to record authorized opening, inspection and resealing events with dates, locations and replacement identifiers. A legitimate intermediate opening should not disappear from the history simply because a new seal was fitted. If a mismatch or broken seal is found, follow the agreed security and receiving process and notify the appropriate parties. Do not infer theft or assign liability solely from the discrepancy; preserve the observation while the responsible parties investigate its explanation and significance.
Keep condition checks independent
Inspect package condition, cargo identity and completeness using the normal receiving plan even when the seal matches. Internal restraint failure, moisture exposure or concealed damage can occur without an unauthorized opening. Link any findings to the seal and custody records as supporting evidence, rather than treat the seal result as a pass or fail test for the equipment. This separation helps the buyer maintain a factual shipment history without giving a security identifier more technical meaning than it can support.
