Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
Can a wind cable satisfy ampacity requirements but still be unsuitable?
The short answer
Yes. Current-carrying capacity and voltage performance answer different questions. A cable can avoid excessive heating under its installation conditions while causing unacceptable voltage drop or voltage rise.
Understand the interface decision
Ampacity addresses thermal limits. Voltage calculations address electrical performance along the circuit. Fault protection, mechanical suitability and terminal compatibility add further constraints. Passing one calculation cannot waive another; the selected conductor must satisfy the complete set of design requirements.
Cable selection joins electrical performance, installation conditions and termination requirements. A calculation for one purpose does not settle the others. Keep the actual route and equipment interface attached to the design review, so later changes remain visible.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- Installation method, ambient conditions and conductor grouping. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- Expected operating current and power-flow direction. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Route impedance and permitted terminal-voltage variation. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- Fault protection, termination and mechanical requirements. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Keep separate calculation results for ampacity and voltage performance, then select a cable that satisfies both alongside the remaining requirements. If a larger conductor is chosen for voltage reasons, verify that the equipment terminals can accept it.
The design record should explain the controlling criterion. This prevents a later substitution based only on current rating from removing the voltage margin that the original designer deliberately provided.
