Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
Can aluminium site cables connect directly to copper wind-equipment terminals?
The short answer
Only when the terminal arrangement is approved for the conductor material and connection method. A terminal suitable for copper does not automatically accept aluminium without additional requirements.
Understand the interface decision
Different conductor materials can require specific lugs, preparation, contact treatment and tightening instructions. The termination also has to accommodate conductor size, thermal behavior and the enclosure arrangement. A physically fitting connection is not evidence of long-term electrical suitability.
Cable selection joins electrical performance, installation conditions and termination requirements. A calculation for one purpose does not settle the others. Keep the actual route and equipment interface attached to the design review, so later changes remain visible.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- Terminal and lug manufacturer’s accepted conductor materials. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- Approved cable sizes, strand classes and connection accessories. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Required preparation, installation and tightening instructions. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- Inspection method and responsibilities for the completed termination. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Obtain confirmation for the actual terminal-lug-conductor combination before installation. Use the accepted connection system rather than improvised adapters. Any change in conductor material should reopen the termination and thermal review, even when the cable ampacity is adequate.
The handover record should identify the installed lug and conductor material. That information matters when later maintenance staff inspect, retighten or replace a connection and need the correct instructions.
