Can tower leveling nuts remain part of the permanent structural load path?

The short answer

They can remain only where the permanent connection design permits the resulting load path. Some connections are intentionally supported on double-nut anchor arrangements; others require compression to pass through grout. The presence of lower nuts during erection does not establish their permanent structural role, and removing them is not automatically correct either.

Identify the intended final support condition

A grouted bearing design may rely on a specified contact region beneath the plate. A standoff or double-nut design can instead transfer compression and other actions through rods and nuts. These concepts create different plate bending, rod bending and fatigue conditions.

Look for the final connection section and calculations rather than inferring intent from a photograph taken before grouting.

Compare the actual stack with the assessment

Check plate thickness, exposed rod length, nut and washer arrangement and any grout that is present. Small geometric changes can alter rod bending or effective restraint. An arrangement assembled from nominally similar fasteners is not necessarily equivalent to the assessed connection.

If grout and lower nuts coexist, the designer should identify how loads are intended to share and which contacts may be credited. An assumed perfect distribution is not established merely because both components touch.

Resolve uncertainty before changing hardware

Ask the structural reviewer to confirm the final load path and the applicable installation detail. If the built arrangement differs, obtain an assessment of its consequences and an engineered disposition.

Do not remove nuts, fill a standoff gap or change anchor tension from this FAQ. FHWA examples of single- and double-nut support connections explain why the distinction matters, but their details are not MARSTON instructions. The required decision is acceptance of one defined permanent base configuration, including its cyclic loading and support conditions.
