What should I do if a wind turbine serial plate is unreadable?

The short answer

Use the available purchase, shipment, commissioning and service records to rebuild a traceable equipment identity with the supplier. Preserve photographs of the plate and the complete assembly, but do not identify a model solely by its appearance. Until identity is resolved, treat part compatibility and maintenance-document applicability as open questions. A guessed model code can turn an ordinary spare-parts request into an avoidable mismatch.

Reconstruct the identity chain

Start with an equipment list or commissioning record that links the installation to an order, delivery or serial reference. Compare it with invoices, packing lists and previous service reports. A site may contain several equipment identities: turbine, controller, converter and tower records need not share one serial number.

Keep the original records even when they disagree. An inconsistent entry is evidence to reconcile, not something to silently replace with the most plausible model name. The supplier can help assess the relationship between the documents and visible configuration.

Separate strong and weak identification clues

Clue How to use it
Serial-linked delivery or commissioning record Trace it to the installed asset.
Part number from an earlier service Check its equipment and revision applicability.
Photograph of the complete assembly Provide supporting context.
Similar online product picture Do not use it as proof of identity.

No inspection requiring unsafe access or dismantling should be improvised merely to obtain an identification photograph.

Record the resolved identity for future work

Once the relevant parties agree the equipment identity, update the asset register and retain the evidence behind that conclusion. Identify any components that were changed after original delivery. A recovered original turbine code does not automatically identify a later replacement converter.

For a MARSTON support enquiry, share the documents already available and describe where identification is missing. This gives a practical route to the correct manuals and parts without inventing a replacement plate, a product specification or an unsupported compatibility claim.
