Can a relocated reference weather station distort long-term wind correction?
The short answer
A relocated reference station can introduce a change unrelated to regional wind climate. If a long-term correction treats the record as homogeneous, that change can distort the inferred resource at the project site. The analyst should investigate station history, exposure and instrumentation before relying on the full series as one consistent reference.
Request the reference metadata
Look for relocation dates, coordinates, sensor heights, instrument changes and surrounding-land changes. A station identifier may remain the same even when the measurement arrangement changes. A long row of annual values is therefore not proof of a continuous physical exposure.
Distinguish documented changes from suspected breaks inferred from the data. Both can justify investigation, but a visual step alone does not identify its cause or the correct adjustment.
Examine the overlap and transfer method
Determine which reference configuration overlaps the on-site campaign. A relationship fitted to the newer exposure may not apply unchanged to older observations from another position. Compare with other suitable references or metadata where possible.
Ask the assessor how discontinuities are treated and how uncertainty is reflected. Do not force a smooth series by an arbitrary offset chosen to remove an inconvenient trend. The correction needs a basis that can be reviewed independently.
Choose an honest reference scope
The defensible result may use a shorter consistent period, another reference or a documented homogenization method. A longer but poorly understood record is not automatically superior. Show the effect of the choice on the project's estimated resource.
Include station history, selected dates and transfer assumptions in the handover. This lets the buyer understand what long term means in the assessment and prevents a familiar station name from implying continuity, representativeness or certainty that the historical record has not established.
