Why does a long-term wind correlation need overlapping measurement periods?

The short answer

Concurrent observations let an analyst compare how the site and reference behave under the same broad weather sequence. Without a suitable overlapping period, a transfer relationship is harder to establish and may rest on stronger assumptions. The length and coverage of overlap matter as well as its existence.

Match periods before comparing values

Align timestamps, interval definitions, units and quality rules. Confirm that both datasets actually represent the same chronological periods. A one-hour offset or a different aggregation rule can weaken or distort a relationship without any physical difference between sites.

Keep valid paired coverage visible. Records present at only one source cannot be treated as concurrent pairs, and estimated values should remain distinguishable from observations.

Check what conditions the overlap contains

Review seasons, direction sectors and wind-speed ranges represented in the paired data. A strong relationship during a narrow weather regime does not automatically justify transfer across every historical condition. More rows from the same limited regime do not necessarily resolve that gap.

Examine whether station or instrument changes occur within the overlap. A single fitted relationship can conceal a changing configuration unless the metadata and periods are considered explicitly.

State the limits of the long-term inference

Document the chosen method, fit and independent checks, along with the assumptions used outside the observed overlap. If the missing conditions can change the project conclusion, consider extending the campaign or using another suitable reference.

The handover should show the paired-data period and coverage rather than only the total length of the reference series. This makes the long-term estimate understandable and prevents several decades of external data from implying that the actual turbine site has been measured for the same duration.
