Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
Will adding a battery make my wind system work in a blackout?
The short answer
Not automatically. A battery stores energy, but outage supply also requires an electrical system that can isolate from the utility, establish the local voltage and frequency, and coordinate the wind source with loads and charging limits. A grid-following wind converter may stop when the grid disappears. Adding a battery somewhere on the site does not prove that the converter can operate on the resulting island.
Separate storage from the supply function
Ask which device creates the local AC reference during an outage. Then identify the permitted wind-converter response, the transfer arrangement and the loads connected to the backed-up circuit. The normal grid-connected diagram and the islanded diagram may be different.
Manufacturer AC-coupling examples demonstrate that this can be engineered, but their equipment ratios and control methods are not universal rules or evidence for another converter.
An energy example does not establish power capability
Illustrative arithmetic: a battery with 12 kWh of usable energy supplying a steady 2 kW load would provide six hours before allowing for conversion losses and operating reserves. That arithmetic does not prove it can start a motor, accept wind surplus or transfer without interruption.
| Question | Different requirement |
|---|---|
| How long? | Usable energy and load over time |
| How much at once? | Continuous and transient power |
| Can wind remain online? | Supported island controls and protection |
Specify the complete outage case
Include low wind, a full battery, an empty battery, a large load step and restoration of the utility supply in the proposed operating description. State which loads may be interrupted and which must remain supplied.
MARSTON has no proprietary battery-storage product. Third-party storage and its inverter must be identified, with compatibility assessed for the complete configuration. A storage quotation should not imply guaranteed backup from the turbine rating alone.
Ask how the system recovers
Outage endurance and restart are separate capabilities. A system might operate while its battery has charge yet need another documented source to recover after the battery reaches its lower operating limit. Ask how the approved system starts again and restores normal operation. Do not assume that a grid-following wind converter can energize a dead AC bus on its own.
