Are site photographs enough to prepare a wind tower quotation?

The short answer

Photographs are useful for an initial conversation, but they are usually insufficient to define the tower and installation scope. Images can show obstacles, terrain and access conditions; they do not reliably establish dimensions, ground capacity, structural loads or connection details. Combine them with a dated site layout and identified equipment information, while marking dimensions and assumptions that have not yet been measured.

Use images for the questions they can answer

A labelled panorama can help locate surrounding buildings and trees. An access-route photograph can reveal a gate or a bend needing measurement. A close view of an existing support can help identify which connection records are missing. None of these images independently proves structural suitability.

Take care with perspective and scale. A distant tree can look smaller than a nearby building even when its actual height is greater. Avoid converting apparent image dimensions into a design input without an appropriate measurement method.

Combine different records

Record Useful contribution Important limit
Photograph Visual condition and context. Scale and hidden details may be unknown.
Measured layout Positions and defined dimensions. Does not establish below-ground structure.
Equipment drawing Identified interfaces and geometry. Must match the supplied revision.
Ground information Inputs for local structural work. Must be suitable for the proposed design.

Label preliminary quotations honestly

If the supplier has only pictures and a location pin, the resulting figure may be a preliminary allowance rather than a complete installed offer. Ask which assumptions it uses and which later findings could change the scope.

Include photo dates, viewing directions and a simple map key so different parties discuss the same location. This often makes the first enquiry more useful than sending a large unlabelled image folder. For a MARSTON project, distinguish the turbine supply from coordinated tower supply and local foundation and installation responsibilities.
