Small wind / Buyer questions
Application integration
Why must a particulate monitor's sample flow remain part of a wind-power assessment?
The short answer
Sample flow is part of how the instrument obtains and interprets its observation. Reducing pump input without preserving the accepted sampling conditions can change the volume observed, particle selection or validity of results. The monitoring owner must define the required service; a lower electrical demand is not automatically an equivalent particulate measurement.
Use the actual measurement method
Obtain the selected monitor's flow requirement, sample path and validity diagnostics. TSI's environmental-monitor manual illustrates a specified flow and particle-selection arrangement. Its flow value is not a universal setting for another instrument. Distinguish a counted-particle method from an optical mass estimate, and retain the maker's actual output definition rather than assigning one conversion to all monitors.
Connect volume and reporting interval
For a simplified constant-flow sample, observed volume equals flow multiplied by duration. If the accepted method requires a defined sample volume, a lower flow changes that volume unless the method permits a corresponding adjustment. This arithmetic does not establish valid operation at the lower flow. Instrument flow faults, inlet conditions and sample interruptions must remain attached to the reported data.
Keep sample-flow validity and concentration records together. An unchanged displayed concentration during a flow-related condition cannot prove that the instrument observed an equivalent sample over the reporting interval.
Preserve valid observations in the energy case
Budget the required pump, sensor and conditioning input over accepted sampling windows. Record invalid intervals separately instead of treating every powered result as service. Ask the instrument supplier whether any low-power mode preserves the required measurement and how that is evidenced. Send its accepted input profile and service windows to the wind integrator. This page provides no exposure assessment, monitoring compliance conclusion or calibration procedure. A MARSTON wind contribution does not validate concentration accuracy or compatibility with a third-party particulate monitor.
