Can weak cellular coverage increase a remote station's energy demand?

The short answer

It can. A communications attempt can require extra searching, retries or repetitions before data is accepted, and the device may remain awake longer. A fixed energy allowance per successful upload can therefore miss poor-link conditions. The size of the effect depends on the actual modem, network configuration, location and reporting behavior.

Use state-based communications evidence

Record connection attempts, time registered or searching, transfer completion and electrical input. Nordic Semiconductor explains that network and radio conditions affect connection energy and that its relative estimates are not exact energy values. Do not convert signal bars or an estimate code directly into watt-hours using an invented universal factor.

Include unsuccessful attempts

A failed upload can consume energy without adding a successful record at the destination. Keep that energy in the station total and retain locally stored measurements separately from transmitted ones. An apparently low daily data volume does not establish low communications duty if the modem repeatedly tries to connect. Include relevant seasonal or obstructed-link cases using actual evidence rather than assuming the best service observed during commissioning.

Include periods with no successful upload in the communications-energy record. A report restricted to successful sessions can systematically exclude the difficult-link intervals that matter most to a remote station's supply margin.

Compare supported reporting policies

Ask the owner which upload deadlines, retry behavior and local-data retention are acceptable, then have the communications supplier define supported options. Do not alter reporting to hide a failure to meet the required service. Give the wind integrator normal and poor-link demand cases with their evidence and uncertainty. A larger turbine cannot by itself correct network coverage, and intermittent wind must not be assumed available whenever an extra attempt occurs. No MARSTON cellular management, carrier availability or guaranteed upload success is established by a general station-energy budget.
