Can a coupling's angular allowance cover parallel shaft offset?
The short answer
No. Angular misalignment and parallel offset describe different shaft relationships. A coupling’s allowance for one cannot automatically be used for the other. In a wind-generator drivetrain review, identify the relative axes and use the displacement categories defined for the exact coupling design.
Draw the two shaft axes
Angular misalignment means the shaft axes point in different directions. Parallel offset means they remain parallel but do not coincide. An axial displacement changes the relative position along the shaft direction. Actual installations can combine all three. A single gap measurement at one coupling location cannot necessarily distinguish them, and a value expressed in millimetres should not be compared directly with one expressed in degrees.
Read the coupling construction
Different flexible elements accommodate these displacements through different deformation patterns. A design with two separated flexible planes may accommodate parallel offset through angular movement at each plane; its allowable offset can then depend on the distance between them. That geometric relationship is not a universal conversion for every coupling. KTR’s instructions separately describe displacement categories and make the model and operating conditions relevant to the allowed values.
Request a displacement-specific comparison
Ask the generator and coupling suppliers to state angular, radial and axial demands under the same cold and operating conditions. Compare each with the exact product’s instructions, including combined-displacement rules. MARSTON coupling construction is not confirmed by its turbine range. Do not use a headline angular allowance to waive an offset problem or realign exposed machinery from this article. The decision is whether the documented coupling can accommodate the actual three-dimensional shaft relationship. In a two-flex-plane coupling, identify the flex-plane spacing used by the manufacturer’s offset relationship. The overall metal spacer length can differ from that effective distance and should not be substituted without confirmation.
