Can a flexible coupling accidentally prevent the shaft's intended axial expansion?

The short answer

Yes. A coupling can transmit axial reactions or reach a travel limit, thereby constraining movement intended to occur at a non-locating bearing. A wind-generator arrangement should assess the complete axial chain; calling a coupling flexible does not establish unrestricted axial freedom.

Trace the intended thermal movement

Identify which bearing locates each shaft and where each shaft end moves as temperatures change. The relative movement at the coupling depends on both machines, their locating points and their support structures. Two shafts that expand by the same amount can still create relative motion if they expand from opposite ends. Their individual expansion values cannot be compared without those reference positions.

Check displacement and reaction separately

A coupling can permit an axial displacement while exerting an elastic restoring force. It can also have a finite gap or stop beyond which the response changes sharply. Both the available travel and resulting axial force matter to the bearing arrangement. A permitted movement number alone does not prove negligible bearing thrust, and a static coupling gap does not establish the entire cold-to-running travel range.

Request a coordinated axial review

Ask the equipment supplier to mark locating bearings, shaft-end movement, coupling nominal position and axial-force assumptions on one arrangement. Use the selected coupling’s displacement and stiffness information where applicable. SKF and KTR support these distinct component concepts; they do not confirm a MARSTON layout. Do not remove a spacer or loosen a retaining feature to create travel. The useful decision is whether the installed coupling preserves the designer’s intended expansion path without exceeding its own displacement or reaction limits. A coupling force check should identify which shaft’s locating support carries the reaction. Without that reference, a permissible axial travel can be accepted while the receiving bearing’s additional thrust remains unassessed.
