Can a single bearing designation prove axial load capacity in both directions?

The short answer

No. A bearing’s ability to support thrust depends on its geometry and installed arrangement, including which direction the force acts. A basic designation or nominal size cannot establish bidirectional axial support for a wind-generator shaft without the actual product and assembly details.

Follow thrust through the contacts

A contact arrangement may support radial load, axial load in one direction, or combined loading under defined restrictions. Ring flanges, contact angles and adjacent thrust elements affect the load path. An axial force that pushes contacts together differs from one that tends to separate the arrangement. The existence of a shoulder on the shaft does not add an unverified axial capacity inside the bearing.

Distinguish bearing and support-system capacity

Two bearings or a separate thrust component can provide axial location collectively even when one bearing alone does not. The arrangement drawing should show which component receives each thrust direction. Also inspect how its rings are retained in shaft and housing. A bearing capable of supporting a force internally cannot transmit that force into the machine if its external axial location is unsuitable.

Request directional capacity evidence

Ask for the full bearing designation, manufacturer axial-load conditions and an assembly section marking the positive and negative thrust paths. Include simultaneous radial load and the relevant operating cases when the maker’s criteria require them. SKF arrangement guidance supports this system view; it does not identify MARSTON bearings. Treat a statement such as “takes thrust” as incomplete until its direction and boundary are defined, and avoid substituting a catalogue rating for a complete shaft-support assessment. Do not assume that an axial force measured at the rotor reaches both bearings equally. The locating arrangement can direct most of that force through one designated support and its particular retention features.
