Mechanical interfaces
Why can a stationary bearing ring still require an interference fit?
The short answer
Because fit selection follows the load direction relative to the ring. A stationary ring can experience a load that rotates around it, creating a tendency for circumferential creeping. Shaft rotation alone therefore cannot determine the correct fit for each wind-generator bearing ring.
Use the ring’s frame of reference
A downward force fixed in the housing acts at a changing circumferential location on a rotating inner ring. A rotating imbalance force can instead turn with that inner ring and sweep around a stationary outer ring. These simplified cases distinguish rotating and stationary loads relative to each ring. Real equipment can combine both effects, making a single label inadequate without the applied-load description.
Connect the classification to the interface
NSK explains why a ring under rotating load generally needs sufficient interference to resist movement relative to its seat, subject to actual design conditions. Temperature, materials, load magnitude and ring deformation also influence the final choice. The correct conclusion is to classify the relative loading; it is not that every stationary outer ring should be loose or every rotating inner ring should use one universal fit.
Request a fit rationale for both rings
Ask the generator designer to identify shaft-fixed, housing-fixed and rotating load contributions and the selected ring fits. Clarify any non-locating displacement requirement before considering changes, since preventing creep and permitting axial movement must be reconciled in the design. NSK’s report supports this reasoning, without defining MARSTON tolerances. A replacement bearing’s nominal dimensions cannot settle the fit question when the load or support arrangement has changed. For indeterminate loading, the supplier should explain how the fit accommodates credible changes in relative load direction. Labelling the outer ring stationary does not resolve a mixed force spectrum into a stationary-ring load.
