Must a floating bearing always slide on its housing seat?

The short answer

No. Some bearing types accommodate axial displacement internally, while other non-locating arrangements rely on a bearing ring moving on its seat. The required fit depends on which mechanism is designed into the wind-generator support. “Floating bearing” alone does not specify a loose housing fit.

Identify the moving interface

A suitable cylindrical or toroidal arrangement can permit relative axial displacement within the bearing. In another arrangement, one ring moves axially relative to its shaft or housing seat. SKF distinguishes these approaches. The second approach needs compatible seat conditions; the first may permit both rings to be firmly fitted. Confusing them can introduce unwanted movement or block the actual displacement path.

Check travel and neighboring constraints

Even an internally displacing bearing has a finite permitted range and a defined nominal position. Seals, adjacent shoulders or a coupling can restrict the overall shaft motion before that range is used. A loose housing fit also creates its own potential sliding resistance and ring-location questions. These interactions require the actual assembly section, rather than a general preference for tight or loose rings.

Ask the supplier to name the mechanism

For a small-wind generator review, request the bearing designation, axial location features and the specified displacement interface. Ask which dimensions establish the available travel in both directions and which loads it must accommodate. Do not revise the housing fit merely because a support is called non-locating. The source explains alternative engineering arrangements; it establishes neither a MARSTON bearing type nor permission to alter retention. Acceptance depends on the supplier’s documented implementation of the selected method. If movement occurs on a seat, ask how the maker accounts for sliding resistance. The required displacement may exist geometrically while generating axial reactions that differ from an internally displacing bearing arrangement.
