Wind Turbine Power Coefficient, Betz Limit & Output

Power coefficient describes a defined conversion boundary. A theoretical aerodynamic limit is not a generator-efficiency rating or evidence of a turbine’s measured electrical output. Name the numerator before interpreting a Cp value.

One wind-power denominator can have different output boundaries.

Rotor mechanical power and delivered electricity belong to different measurements. A useful comparison keeps wind reference, area and output point together.

01 / Wind power

Define the incoming-flow reference.

For the usual uniform-flow comparison, available wind power is P_wind = 0.5ρAU³.

For the usual uniform-flow comparison, available wind power is P_wind = 0.5ρAU³. Density ρ is in kg/m³, area A in m² and wind speed U in m/s, giving watts. The area is the chosen rotor disk, not a land footprint.

The expression describes an incoming energy-flow reference. It does not establish how much a real turbine delivers. Keep the density and wind basis attached to the calculation rather than substituting a regional annual average for every operating point.

02 / Cp boundary

Specify mechanical rotor power or a different numerator.

Rotor aerodynamic Cp is mechanical power extracted by the rotor divided by the corresponding available wind power.

Rotor aerodynamic Cp is mechanical power extracted by the rotor divided by the corresponding available wind power. SAM’s wind-turbine documentation uses this rotor-to-mechanical boundary. A ratio using downstream electrical power has a different boundary and must be labelled accordingly.

Generator losses, converter behaviour and auxiliary consumption are separate from the aerodynamic quantity. Do not describe a rotor Cp value as the complete system’s electrical efficiency, or compare it directly with a shaft-to-electrical generator efficiency.

03 / Theory

A limit is not a product measurement.

The DOE glossary identifies the Betz theoretical maximum as 16/27, approximately 59.3%; it is not a measured MARSTON coefficient..

The DOE glossary identifies the Betz theoretical maximum as 16/27, approximately 59.3%; it is not a measured MARSTON coefficient.

The ideal model behind that limit is not a certification, annual energy forecast or universal operating target. A brochure quoting the theoretical limit still needs actual performance evidence for its equipment and measurement boundary.

04 / Worked example

Keep invented inputs visibly hypothetical.

Assume uniform flow with density 1.2 kg/m³, disk area 10 m² and speed 8 m/s.

Assume uniform flow with density 1.2 kg/m³, disk area 10 m² and speed 8 m/s. Available power is 0.5 × 1.2 × 10 × 8³ = 3,072 W. These are illustrative inputs, not a MARSTON operating condition.

If hypothetical rotor mechanical Cp is 0.30, rotor mechanical power is 921.6 W. Electrical output is not determined by that calculation. No actual model Cp, generator efficiency or annual yield is assigned by the example.

05 / Operating data

A maximum does not describe the whole curve.

A peak coefficient at one operating condition does not identify every point’s output.

A peak coefficient at one operating condition does not identify every point’s output. Record rotor speed, flow definition, geometry revision, loading condition and how power was determined when reviewing a reported value.

Also retain uncertainty and data-processing information. A coefficient derived from mismatched wind and power records may reflect the mismatch. Use the power-curve guide for the separate question of electrical performance evidence.

06 / Project use

Do not replace an energy assessment with Cp.

Annual energy requires the applicable power information across the site’s wind conditions and the relevant availability and loss assumptions.

Annual energy requires the applicable power information across the site’s wind conditions and the relevant availability and loss assumptions. Multiplying rated kW or peak Cp by a convenient number of hours cannot establish that result.

MARSTON’s confirmed ratings and rotor diameters identify product size, not a released Cp map. For comparison, retain the actual performance report and its boundary, while generator-loss evidence addresses a different conversion stage.

Engineering questions.

Is the Betz limit generator efficiency?

No. It concerns an ideal aerodynamic extraction model, not shaft-to-electrical machine efficiency.

Is Cp always electrical output divided by wind power?

Identify the convention. Rotor aerodynamic Cp uses mechanical extraction; electrical ratios have a different boundary.

Does Cp 0.30 describe a MARSTON model?

No. It is an invented value used only in the worked example.

Is disk area an installation footprint?

No. Site layout requires separate three-dimensional and project-boundary information.

Can peak Cp establish annual energy?

No. The applicable operating curve and site conditions are needed.

Does the theoretical limit prove certification?

No. A theoretical relation is not product conformity or performance evidence.
