Blade Root Stress Concentration: Nominal & Local Quantities
A nominal section stress simplifies a load over a reference area. A hole, transition or other local detail can change the nearby stress field. Interpreting that concentration requires naming the stress component, geometry and loading convention; a coloured maximum alone is insufficient.
Define the denominator before comparing the peak.
A concentration factor is tied to a particular nominal stress and model. Keeping those definitions consistent separates a bounded local amplification from an ideal mathematical singularity and from a material failure assessment.
01 / Nominal stress
A reference stress deliberately simplifies the field.
For a simple axial reference, σnom = F/Aref.
For a simple axial reference, σnom = F/Aref. Gross area, net area and another nominated section definition can give different denominators. The reference must remain explicit when a local peak is compared with it.
A hypothetical force of 400 N and reference area of 100 mm² give 4 MPa. That does not prove the local stress is uniform across a hole or a blade root. Bending, contact and directional material response require different or additional components in the field.
02 / Geometric factor
A finite concentration preserves its stress definition.
For an applicable linear elastic case, define Kt = σlocal,max/σnom with compatible stress components and a stated reference.
For an applicable linear elastic case, define Kt = σlocal,max/σnom with compatible stress components and a stated reference. COMSOL’s original concentration discussion makes this normalisation explicit. Kt is dimensionless, but it depends on the geometry and the loading description.
If an invented model has Kt = 2.5 and σnom = 4 MPa, its represented local maximum is 10 MPa. Changing the nominal reference without updating Kt breaks that reconstruction. Neither hypothetical number is a MARSTON root property or an allowable stress.
03 / Several components
A local peak has a location and a direction.
Normal, shear and other reported stress measures answer different questions.
Normal, shear and other reported stress measures answer different questions. A maximum of one component need not occur at the maximum of another. An equivalent stress condenses a tensor through a stated rule; it should not be silently used as a directional composite strength.
The stress-and-strain guide explains local material axes. For a root with multiple load-transfer paths, a component’s location and reference can matter as much as its numerical magnitude. The geometric concentration factor alone does not identify the full tensor.
04 / Ideal singularity
An unbounded model peak is a different issue.
A mathematically sharp corner, ideal point load or some simplified constraints can produce a stress singularity.
A mathematically sharp corner, ideal point load or some simplified constraints can produce a stress singularity. Refining that ideal representation may increase the reported maximum instead of approaching one finite value. COMSOL distinguishes this from a bounded stress concentration.
A larger plotted maximum under refinement is therefore not automatically a newly discovered product load. It can reflect the model’s idealisation. Conversely, a smooth plot is not proof that all relevant detail has been captured. Model representation and physical local geometry must remain distinct.
05 / Interfaces
Local geometry interacts with how forces enter.
A hole’s nearby field differs when it transfers load through contact, an embedded connection or an unloaded boundary under remote stress.
A hole’s nearby field differs when it transfers load through contact, an embedded connection or an unloaded boundary under remote stress. A concentration result from one case cannot be transferred to another merely because their visible hole diameters match.
Directional laminate response, interface traction and existing force states can further change the local description. The joint-stiffness guide treats one force-sharing mechanism, while a local stress model resolves how the resulting force is distributed.
06 / Assessment
Concentration does not independently predict failure or life.
A finite local stress still needs a suitable material and structural criterion for the condition considered.
A finite local stress still needs a suitable material and structural criterion for the condition considered. A geometric Kt is also distinct from fatigue notch sensitivity or a complete cycle-to-life relationship. These concepts should not be compressed into one unexplained factor.
No MARSTON root geometry, local field, stress concentration factor or strength is established here. This page offers no hole alteration, radius change, tightening value or structural verdict. It explains how nominal and local quantities can be interpreted without inventing product construction.

Key concepts and conditions.
Read each quantity with its reference, units and stated conditions. A general relation does not establish a model-specific value.
| Concept / quantity | Meaning / relation | Conditions / limits |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal stress | F/Aref in the simple axial case | Area convention is explicit. |
| Local maximum | Named stress at a location | Component and model conditions matter. |
| Kt | σlocal,max/σnom | Dimensionless geometric concentration definition. |
| Singularity | Unbounded ideal-model field | Different from a finite converged concentration. |
| Failure criterion | Material and condition dependent | Not supplied by Kt alone. |
Engineering questions.
Is nominal stress the actual value everywhere?
No. It is a nominated simplified reference.
Can Kt be used with any area convention?
No. Its denominator must match the convention under which it was defined.
Is the 10 MPa example an actual root stress?
No. It is hypothetical multiplication of a defined reference and factor.
Does a larger mesh-refined peak always reveal a larger physical stress?
No. An ideal singularity can drive the reported maximum upward.
Does one geometric factor establish composite failure?
No. Directional material and structural criteria remain separate.
Is a root modification or acceptance threshold supplied?
No. Actual construction and limits are not assigned.
