Can a measured nacelle tilt be read directly as yaw-bearing clearance?
The short answer
Not directly. Measured nacelle tilt can contain bearing movement, elastic deformation of the support, mounting-interface motion and measurement effects. If a yaw bearing is fitted, its actual internal clearance must be carefully assessed using the manufacturer’s defined measurement arrangement rather than inferred from an arbitrary angle.
Separate displacement sources
A marker on the nacelle moves relative to a distant marker through every compliant element between them. A flexible flange can contribute even if bearing internal movement is unchanged. The applied load and its direction also determine how clearances close and elastic parts deflect. A measurement without a defined loading state cannot assign the observed motion to one component.
Account for the measurement lever arm
For small angles, differential displacement divided by the relevant separation can approximate tilt in radians. In a hypothetical illustration, 0.5 mm across 1 m corresponds to about 0.0005 rad. That calculation describes the marker geometry only; it does not prove 0.5 mm of internal bearing clearance. Marker placement and intervening deformation determine what physical quantity was actually measured.
Request an interface-specific method
Ask the yaw-assembly supplier for measurement points, load state, instrument arrangement and the interpretation/acceptance criteria for the selected bearing. Compare any repeated readings under equivalent conditions. Rothe Erde inspection and installation concepts concern defined bearing measurements, not a MARSTON tilt threshold. Do not tighten supports or adjust a bearing merely to reduce an unexplained nacelle-angle reading. The immediate decision is whether the measurement isolates the intended bearing quantity or requires additional component-level evidence. When comparing tilt readings, use the same marker separation and load state. Changing the lever arm can change displacement even where the underlying angular motion is unchanged, creating a misleading apparent condition trend.
