Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
How should wind controls coordinate with a microgrid’s source-changeover sequence?
The short answer
Coordinate wind enabling, curtailment and shutdown with the actual transfer sequence and reference source. A source change can alter which device establishes voltage and frequency and whether export remains permitted.
Understand the interface decision
Transfer equipment can create brief interruptions or intermediate states that differ from steady grid or island operation. The wind converter and turbine controller must interpret those states consistently. A source transfer should not leave the rotor without its approved energy-management response while the electrical reference changes.
Microgrid behavior must be reviewed as a coordinated system, including storage, generation, loads and auxiliary supplies. Capability at one port does not prove behavior in every operating mode. Confirm third-party equipment compatibility in the specific integration documents.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- The transfer-switch sequence and every intermediate source state. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- The device establishing the electrical reference in each mode. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- Wind-converter permissions and turbine-control actions during transfer. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- Restoration conditions, delays and response to a failed changeover. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Accept a coordinated state sequence covering both successful and unsuccessful transfer. Do not connect a grid-following converter to an undefined bus merely because another source is expected to appear shortly. The approved system design must establish the permitted transitions.
Test records should align switch positions, bus conditions and wind-system states. Keep a successful steady island run separate from evidence that the transition into and out of that state is controlled.
