How should fertilizer spray drift near a wind turbine be assessed?

The short answer

Fertilizer drift should be assessed from the actual product, concentration and contact conditions, rather than the fact that a turbine is on a farm. Different formulations can create different material questions. Establish which surfaces received the spray, whether it remained wet or dried into deposits and whether the affected components show a change in condition.

Identify the chemical exposure

Obtain the product identity and available safety or technical data from the site operator. Distinguish direct spray, diluted drift and later runoff, because they do not establish the same contact conditions. Include whether another treatment product was mixed with it. A generic description such as fertilizer cannot establish compatibility with a coating or seal, and a broad agricultural label supplies no wind-equipment qualification.

Match every contacted material

The review may include painted metal, bare fasteners, composite surfaces, elastomers and transparent covers. A chemical compatible with one surface is not automatically compatible with the assembly. Ask the relevant materials specialist what evidence is needed for the actual contact duration, temperature and residue. Do not choose a neutralizing chemical or protective coating before the contaminant and the existing surface system have been identified.

A brief diluted drift event and repeated direct contact with concentrated product should not share one assumed exposure entry. Separating them helps the materials reviewer decide whether existing compatibility information is relevant or whether the actual use conditions remain outside its scope.

Decide whether cleaning or assessment is needed

Approved cleaning may limit continued contact, but any discoloration, swelling, coating lifting or corrosion should be assessed on its own evidence. If the source is recurring, the environmental review should address repeated deposition instead of treating each patch as an isolated spill. MARSTON chemical resistance and seal materials are unconfirmed here. The result should be a specific compatibility and condition decision for the exposed component.
