How should a wind system respond if its dump-load circuit becomes open?

The short answer

The required response must be defined by the turbine and controller design. Detecting an open dump-load path is useful only if the remaining protective strategy can handle the resulting loss of energy absorption.

Understand the interface decision

An open resistor, broken cable or failed switching device can remove the intended dissipation path while the rotor remains driven. The design should identify which diagnostic detects the condition and what independent or alternative response is available. No universal replacement action is safe for every turbine.

A rotating wind turbine can retain mechanical input while electrical conditions change. Define the complete control action and energy destination together. A component-level response is only one part of the system-level protective function being assessed.

Put these inputs in the review record

Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.

  • Failure modes of the resistor, cable and switching path. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
  • Diagnostic coverage and the time needed to recognize loss of load. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
  • The turbine’s approved response when dissipation is unavailable. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
  • Alarm, restart and service requirements after the event. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.

Define the acceptance boundary

Accept the design when the credited detection and response cover the stated fault cases. Do not regard a controller output command as proof that current is flowing through the dump load. The verification must address the actual energy path.

Use a controlled engineering test or validated analysis appropriate to the system. The evidence should connect the imposed fault, detected condition and resulting protective action without requiring uncontrolled open-circuit operation in the field.
