Why can corrosion appear around a covered joint while nearby wind equipment looks clean?

The short answer

Covered joints can retain moisture and deposits even when nearby open surfaces dry or are washed by rain. Corrosion near an overlap therefore does not contradict a clean surrounding surface. The important decision is whether the visible edge indicates a local sheltered exposure or concealed attack that cannot be assessed from the outside.

Use the geometry as evidence

Identify the pocket, overlap, gasket boundary or contact edge where staining begins. Compare it with the direction of rain, runoff and prevailing deposits. NASA describes crevice corrosion as a localized mechanism associated with restricted contact regions. This is a possible explanation for a pattern, not proof of the particular mechanism or materials. The protected-looking appearance of a joint should not be treated as evidence that its interior is dry.

Define what the external view cannot show

An edge photograph may reveal discharge but not the condition of hidden contact surfaces. Ask whether the supplier can interpret the pattern from approved construction details, or whether a qualified inspection under controlled access is necessary. Do not pry apart the joint, pull out seals or loosen hardware to investigate it informally. Those actions can change loading, sealing and the very evidence needed to understand the source.

A clean exposed bolt head does not establish the condition beneath its washer or another covered contact. The visible and concealed regions can have different wetting histories, so the assessment should identify which region actually controls the unresolved serviceability question.

Link remediation to the cause

If the issue is retained contamination, simply repainting the visible edge may leave the exposure mechanism unchanged. If concealed metal loss is possible, cleaning the outside does not establish remaining condition. Request an assessment that identifies the affected function and any examination needed before a repair is selected. Drainage changes, seal substitutions and isolation of dissimilar materials are design decisions; none should be improvised from this general corrosion explanation.
