Small wind / Buyer questions
Electrical configuration
Which auxiliary supplies must be available before a wind system can restart from a dead bus?
The short answer
Identify every supply needed for sensing, controls, switching and protective actions before the main wind conversion path becomes available. A generator capable of producing energy does not automatically power the equipment needed to start it.
Understand the interface decision
A dead-bus condition can create dependencies between controllers, contactors, communication and the source that establishes the electrical reference. If each device waits for another, the system may not have a supported recovery path. The design must specify how the starting sequence obtains its initial auxiliary energy.
Microgrid behavior must be reviewed as a coordinated system, including storage, generation, loads and auxiliary supplies. Capability at one port does not prove behavior in every operating mode. Confirm third-party equipment compatibility in the specific integration documents.
Put these inputs in the review record
Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.
- Control and protection loads that must operate before generation. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
- The source and permitted state of each starting supply. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
- The order of enabling the bus, converter and turbine functions. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
- Recovery limits if the initial auxiliary supply is insufficient. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.
Define the acceptance boundary
Accept a complete dependency and starting sequence rather than a list of nominal auxiliary voltages. Do not assume self-start from a running-system diagram. Keep any external starting source or required battery state explicit in the operating requirements.
A demonstration should identify the initial supplies deliberately retained and the state of the main bus. This gives the customer a realistic recovery condition instead of a broad claim based on a partial restart.
