Small wind / Buyer questions
Application decisions
Can wind power cover overnight aeration at an aquaculture site?
The short answer
Wind can contribute energy to aeration, but an overnight requirement needs a supply plan for low-wind hours and equipment faults. An annual-average daily yield cannot establish that the aerators will operate through a particular night. Define the required aeration service and interruption tolerance with the aquaculture specialist, then assess generation, conversion, storage and backup as a coordinated system. Do not make a turbine the sole oxygen-support provision on the strength of its rated kW.
Define the protected duty
Separate aerators, circulation pumps, monitoring and other site loads. Their operating schedules and consequences of interruption differ. The biological requirement may change with temperature, stocking conditions and process operation. This article supplies an electrical-planning method; it does not determine acceptable oxygen levels or a safe interruption duration. Those limits must be established by the responsible aquaculture team before an energy proposal is accepted.
Count the whole night
Assume an identified aeration duty draws 4 kW for 12 hours. The load requires 48 kWh during that period. Another 6 kWh of monitoring and auxiliary demand brings the overnight total to 54 kWh. This hypothetical load example says nothing about a MARSTON turbine’s production. Even a wind system averaging 54 kWh/day over a year could deliver substantially less during a particular night.
Keep energy and restart capability separate
Check the power-conversion equipment against simultaneous operation and the required motor starting behavior. Available stored energy does not by itself prove that the inverter can start all aerators, while an adequate kW rating does not prove adequate duration. Identify transfer behavior, alarms and the response to a failed component. These functions belong in the complete system design and acceptance evidence.
Make the backup boundary explicit
A proposal should state what maintains aeration during a calm night, what happens when storage reaches its operating limit, and who is responsible for restoration. Retain and assess existing reliable supply while the wind contribution is evaluated. Compare operating records and energy forecasts using the same overnight window. MARSTON does not supply its own battery product; externally proposed storage and protection need an equipment-specific compatibility review.
