Why must a wind AC breaker’s interrupting rating be checked separately from its current rating?

The short answer

Check both continuous load current and the fault current the breaker may have to interrupt. A breaker with sufficient ampere rating can still have inadequate short-circuit breaking capacity.

Understand the interface decision

The supply network can feed a fault in the wind AC circuit independently of the turbine’s normal output. Breaking capacity is therefore a different design question from power export or conductor loading. The relevant rating must be checked at the actual system voltage and installation conditions.

Protection decisions depend on the actual earthing arrangement, available fault energy and equipment instructions. Treat the following as review inputs for the responsible electrical designer. Device names alone cannot establish a coordinated or compliant installation.

Put these inputs in the review record

Use a project-specific worksheet to capture the following information. For each entry, name the document, revision and person responsible for resolving any uncertainty.

  • Prospective short-circuit current at the breaker location. Identify the exact configuration and the supporting document.
  • Breaker breaking-capacity ratings at the actual operating voltage. Keep the design assumptions visible in the project record.
  • Any tested backup or cascading arrangement credited by the designer. Name the responsible reviewer and resolve any missing information.
  • Coordination with conductors and downstream wind equipment. State how this entry will be verified during acceptance.

Define the acceptance boundary

Accept the device only when the available-fault assessment and protection design support the complete arrangement. Do not reduce the assumed fault current because the turbine is small. Any manufacturer-tested combination must match the exact devices and conditions used.

The calculation should identify the connection point and source assumptions. This helps the reviewer recognize when a transformer replacement or supply upgrade invalidates an earlier breaker selection.
