Can a telecom shelter's cooling demand be inferred from radio power alone?

The short answer

Radio power is one input to a shelter cooling assessment, but it does not determine a fixed cooling-electricity percentage. Ambient conditions, enclosure heat transfer and the installed cooling arrangement change the input required to remove heat. Free cooling can still consume fan or pump electricity, while a compressor mode can have a very different profile.

Distinguish heat generated from cooling input

Identify how much equipment heat enters the conditioned space and which radio components are outside it. Separate electrical energy consumed by cooling from thermal energy removed. Include solar gain and other actual shelter heat sources where the cooling designer considers them relevant. Do not apply a generic coefficient to an equipment nameplate or assume that all outdoor radio input heats the indoor room.

Use a mode-and-weather comparison

Obtain operating descriptions for free cooling, mixed operation and compressor cooling where fitted. Match measured power and accepted room conditions to those states. Fan input may remain when the compressor is off. Filter condition and airflow restrictions can also change a real installation's behavior, so preserve service observations rather than presenting a vendor's example climate as the site's forecast.

Separate an equipment heat-load estimate from a cooling unit's electrical trace. A change in ambient conditions can alter the latter even when radio activity and internal heat generation remain similar.

Specify the complete telecom load

Overlay the supported cooling states with radio demand and local weather in consistent intervals. Identify the cooling services that remain required during low radio traffic and power recovery. Give the wind integrator the resulting combined electrical profile and the equipment's approved supply requirements. The separate cooling supplier should confirm room-service capability. STULZ illustrates cooling options, not a universal energy-saving percentage. A wind package quotation must still state its actual connection and cannot promise telecom temperature control from turbine capacity alone.
