Can turbulence intensities calculated over different intervals be compared directly?

The short answer

Turbulence-intensity values calculated with different recording and averaging conventions should not automatically be compared as equivalent. The quantity depends on a defined standard deviation and mean over a specified window. Different sampling, filtering or missing-data treatment can change those statistics even when the site has not changed.

Request the calculation definition

Record the sampling cadence, averaging window, wind-speed measurement method and the valid-data rule within each window. Ask whether the reported standard deviation comes from retained observations or from an already aggregated series. Those sources contain different information.

Keep the observation height and exposure alongside the statistic. Matching the numerical method does not resolve a sensor placed in a different flow environment.

Compare only supportable quantities

Where suitable raw data exist, recompute the statistics using a common method and show the remaining differences. If only interval means remain, do not claim to reconstruct the original within-interval variability by interpolation.

Examine the mean-speed range over which the comparison is made. A ratio calculated at weak mean flow can behave differently from one calculated in energy-producing conditions. State any speed conditioning instead of selecting observations solely to make one dataset appear less turbulent.

Keep the project conclusion within the evidence

A reported difference may justify further investigation of exposure, instrument response or operating conditions. It should not immediately become a claimed product-suitability decision without the applicable equipment requirements and assessment method.

The handover should include definitions, coverage and comparison rules, with a clear statement of what cannot be reconstructed from the archived record. This prevents a short turbulence percentage from implying a level of measurement consistency or engineering approval that the underlying datasets do not establish.
