Can an electrically suitable slip ring be mounted on any rotating shaft?

The short answer

No. Electrical ratings do not establish mechanical mounting compatibility. A slip ring also needs the shaft geometry, alignment, runout and external-load conditions specified by its maker. A wind-yaw rotary interface can satisfy current and voltage requirements while remaining mechanically unsuitable.

Describe the rotating support

Identify whether the unit is flange-mounted, shaft-mounted or connected through a flexible drive. Each arrangement establishes a different mechanical reference. Shaft runout can make a rigidly attached rotor move relative to the stator; misalignment can impose loads the unit was not designed to carry. A bore that slides over the shaft therefore proves only one geometric feature, not the complete mounting condition.

Review the permitted accommodation

Moog’s AC6023 guide uses a flexible connection to accommodate eccentricity and excludes external structural loading. Its instructions are specific to that capsule and should not be copied to a different through-bore unit. Ask how the selected design handles the predicted relative motion. Internal bearings, a floating stator or a coupling can play different roles, and none should be presumed from the product name.

Request a mechanical interface schedule

Ask for the mounting datum, permitted shaft/runout/alignment conditions, allowed loads, speed and restraint detail alongside the circuit specification. Confirm that the installed support and cable forces meet those conditions. MARSTON slip-ring use and dimensions are unconfirmed. Do not machine an adapter or rigidly connect both sides from electrical specifications alone. The useful decision is whether the actual shaft and support provide the mechanical environment required by the exact electrically selected rotary joint. Check whether the shaft runout requirement applies at the mounting region or another reference feature. A favorable reading on a nearby journal cannot automatically represent the surface that locates the slip-ring rotor.
